G’Day!

Good luck Greg and welcome Daryl!

AWA wishes Greg (ex Treasurer) and his family the best of luck with their move to NJ and the committee will definitely miss his sense of humour and sporting updates!

Daryl Gruar has joined the committee as the new Treasurer and we look forward to working with him and having him on board.

”Welcome Aussies, and friends of Australians, to the Australians in Washington Association website” (awadc.com)

AWA is a not for profit organization for Australians and friends living the wider DC metropolitan area. Members meet socially on a regular basis at many of our major gatherings that centre around most Australian public holidays, or at our monthly ‘happy hour’ after work drinks and Pot Luck dine-around night. Major Social Events:

  •  Australia Day - Usually run in conjunction with the Embassy of Australia Social Club (EASC), these event are a great opportunity to connect with other Aussies.
  • Easter - Our Easter party is a great event for the whole family. With craft, a bbq, games for kids and grown-ups an Easter Egg Hunt (with great cadbury flown in especially for the occasion) and a special visit from the Easter Bunny. This event is always a favourite.
  • ANZAC - We observe the reverence and meaning of the day with the Dawn Service at the Korean War Memorial followed by the gunfire breakfast. This is usually followed by a moving service at the National Cathedral. This is followed by a party, Aussie style. With two-up, Aussie drinks and food we celebrate what it is to be Australian.
  • AFL Grand Final - Run in conjunction with the DC Baltimore Eagles (local AFL team) and the EASC, this event at the Embassy includes a live feed of the game and the chance to indulge in some great footy food.
  • Melbourne Cup - Along with the EASC, this event includes fashions on the field, champagne, a calcutta, champagne, several cup sweeps, champagne and the chance to watch the race live.
  • Christmas - We all look forward to the children’s christmas party all year. With craft, singing and a visit from the bloke with the long white beard himself. Around the same time we also join with the EASC to indulge in a Christmas Cheer Aussie Style. While we can’t do anything about the weather, this is a great time to join with all of your compatriots.

AWA also organises special ad-hoc excursions and functions for members and their families. Examples include a private tour of the Pentagon, a group tour of the White House and dinner at the residence of the Australian Ambassador.Children’s Events: Members with children are encouraged to attend our weekly play group, the Koala Club Play Group, participate in our annual Easter Egg Hunt and other activities specially arranged for young Aussies.Membership: Membership starts at $50 for a year subscription and includes regular electronic newsletters that advise future events, sporting fixtures and other performance of interest. Members also have the opportunity to promote their business on the newsletter bulletin board With the increasing number of Aussies moving into the greater DC area the AWA Forum provides a great opportunity to make new friends and business contact. The AWA is always looking for people to expand our “family” away form home.  Please feel free to check out our website, ‘Facebook’ or ‘Meetup’ pages for information, upcoming events and information on how become a member.

We look forward to meeting you at an event real soon!
